Auto sales rise despite tensions, uncertainty

New vehicle sales in Canada climbed nearly eight per cent in May, even as the industry braced for potential trade disruptions and tariff fallout. DesRosiers Automotive Consultants estimated that Canadian new vehicle sales reached 187,000 units in May 2025 — a 7.9 per cent increase over the same month last year. While the year-over-year gain is notable, DAC points out that May 2024 was a weak comparison point and that this May had one additional selling day.

Average U.S. Vehicle Age Rises to 12.8 Years

The average age of U.S. light vehicles rose to 12.8 years in 2024, an increase of two months, according to S&P Global Mobility. This marks the second consecutive year of a two-month increase, S&P said. Vehicle registrations surpassed 16 million in 2024 for the first time since 2019. This was not enough to offset the growing volume of aged vehicles as vehicles in operation grew to 289 million with a steady 4.5% scrappage rate.
