Watch as we Build a Roll Cage from Scratch

If you want to get serious about racing, you’re going to need safety equipment. And one of the most important devices is a proper roll cage. It not only protects the driver in a serious rollover crash but also serves as the most secure mounting point for the safety harness. And as an added bonus, it stiffens the chassis for improved handling.

One of Eastwood’s own engineers, Nick, is an avid motorsport enthusiast, using his personal VW GTI for track day events. As he’s gotten more serious about the sport, he’s decided it’s time to up his game in the safety department. As the GTI is a fairly popular car with many racers, aftermarket options already exist for roll cages. But Nick had some pretty specific requirements as the car is still streetable and needs to be functional as such. A full cage was out of the picture and he didn’t want a bolt-together half-cage, so he designed his own.

In this video, Nick walks through his project from the design and fabrication phases all the way to installation. Watch as he builds a roll cage from scratch using tubing benders, a tubing notcher, and a TIG welder.
