One key to making EV adoption to work is fast charging. People that are used to filling up their gas tanks in mere minutes won’t be so easily swayed by the idea of having to sit at a charging station for nearly an hour. While there are certainly EVs on the market that can get people back on the road in less than 20 minutes, some EVs need a bit more time. And when I say “a bit more,” I mean over 20 minutes just to get to 100 miles of range.

In charging testing done by Edmunds, they found the fastest and slowest charging EVs on the market. While Edmunds used metrics like miles per charging hour to mainly measure the speed, it can come off a bit confusing. So we’ll stick with their basic metric here: the time it took to get to 100 miles of range. The EVs here are the slowest charging EVs they tested, in order from least slowest to slowest.

It should also be noted here that Edmunds didn’t exactly say why these EVs took longer to charge. It simply seems that these particular EVs have a worse instance of charging loss than the others.

Average time to add 100 miles of range: 18 mins 4 seconds

While Ford cut prices on the Lightning lineup because of slowing demand, the Lariat Extended range is still a pickup that starts out at nearly $78,000. While you get 580 horsepower and 320 miles of range from its 131 kWh battery, you’ll have to wait just over 18 minutes just to get 100 miles of range when charging.

While this trim of the Mach-E is a bit more basic compared to other trims — especially for its near $50,000 starting price — you do still get 290 hp and 310 miles of range. You’ll have to wait over 18 minutes to get 100 miles of that range charging though.

According to Edmunds, the most expensive Lightning is also the slowest charging. Edmunds noted that the Platinum charged 13 miles of range slower than the Lightning Lariat. While that $90,000+ price will get you nearly 600 hp and 300 miles of range (maybe; Ford doesn’t actually officially list just how much range this thing gets in the specs), you’ll be sitting at a charger for nearly 19 minutes just for 100 miles of range.

Average time to add 100 miles of range: 19 mins

The R1T Launch Edition is certainly a performer for its $74,000+. Aside from something wild like the Hummer EV, where else are you going to find a pickup that weighs over 7,000 pounds that can hit 60 mph in under four seconds with 835 hp and 314 miles of range? The downside is spending all that dough and having to wait 19 minutes at EV charger for 100 miles of range.

In one of the random outliers of Edmunds testing, an inch of wheel size difference caused slower charging, even though we all know that wheel size shouldn’t have anything to do with how fast an EV charges.

The R1S’ nearly $92,000 starting price gets you performance that’s just as wild as the R1T pickup, just with an extra row of seats. However, charging up 100 miles of the R1S’ 316-mile range takes over 19 minutes.

In another weird instance, all-wheel drive is a detriment to both range and charging speed with the Mustang Mach-E. Choosing to go with all-wheel drive on the Mach-E Premium loses you 23 miles of range vs. the rear wheel drive model and adds on nearly two minutes of charging time to get to 100 miles of range (compared the Premium extended range).

Average time to add 100 miles of range: 23 mins 22 seconds

The Mustang Mach-E GT Performance is the most capable Mach-E in the lineup. With 480 hp, it can hit 60 mph in just over three seconds. That performance comes with a few tradeoffs, mainly you spend more money for less. Its $60,000 starting price gets you just 260 miles of range and over 20 minutes of waiting at a charger to get over half of that.

Average time to add 100 miles of range: 33 mins 31 seconds

The Chevy Bolt is one of the cheapest new EVs you can buy. Unfortunately it comes with long charging times. In the time it takes other EVs to fully charge, the Bolt will barely add 100 miles of range.

Chevrolet’s brilliant move of deciding to offer its Bolt as a small crossover comes with a huge caveat: it’s the slowest charging EV on the market. Its cheap starting price of just under $28,000 is tempting, but some buyers might pause when discovering that they’ll be waiting at a charger nearly 35 minutes to add over half its battery range.
