I am a huge fan of weird and wacky designs that slipped past OEM’s finance departments and made it to production in all of their unusual glory, and wing mirrors are no exception. A very logical addition to cars that allows drivers to glance over and know what’s going on behind them, side-view mirrors often are another boring element that manufacturers will slap onto a car, but sometimes designers get to have a little fun and shake things up.

I’ve been enjoying writing stories about how features like car keys and other seemingly normal car parts can sometimes be points of innovation, and whenever I check the comments on those stories I see countless incredibly considerate and gently delivered suggestions from the audience about cars that I missed. So I gave our audience the chance to share their favorite weird side-view mirrors, and I must say I was surprised by some of the niche answers that came in.

Here are 15 of the weirdest wing mirrors that the Jalopnik audience suggested.

Despite their function, I always found high-mounted mirrors weird.

How about a Lamborghini Murcielago’s mirrors? Given how their height is lacking, can a driver actually see anything back there when using them? How the mirrors have to jut out to clear the ass end of the Lambo doesn’t help the car’s aesthetics either.

Also reminding us that most ‘wing mirrors’ are door mirrors. Being mounted on the wings, or ‘fenders’ if you’re a colonial, isn’t as fashionable as it once was.

Weird back in the day, but common now, I believe the Ford Fairmont and Mercury Zephyr were the first American cars where the wing mirrors were mounted in the side window opening rather than bolted to the exterior of the door.
