Hyundai Motor America has identified an issue affecting 13,511 examples of the 2024 Elantra sedan, Venue crossover, and slightly larger Kona. The manufacturer's American division says that an electrical short may occur in the EGR valve assembly, resulting in a sudden loss of drive power that – obviously – increases the risk of a crash.
First of all, what's EGR and why do the aforementioned vehicles come with it? Simply put, an exhaust gas recirculation system is designed to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by recirculating exhaust back to the engine. By reducing the amount of oxygen going into the combustion chamber, the EGR system also reduces the amount of fuel burnt and the peak combustion temperature in the cylinders, therefore reducing the amount of NOx.

That said, Hyundai Motor Company determined that affected EGR valve assemblies contain a sensor that was contaminated with solder flux by the supplier. Carbonized solder flux may lead to an electrical short between the sensor terminals, resulting in the malfunction of the EGR valve or crank position sensor and a loss of motive power.

The South Korean automaker lists two part numbers for the iffy exhaust gas recirculation valve assemblies. 28410-2M330 is for the 2024 model year Venue and Elantra, whereas 28400-2J310 is the part number of the EGR valve assembly in the 2024 model year Kona. Said assemblies come from North Chungcheong-based BorgWarner Chungju.

Hyundai Motor Company informed the American office about a global investigation into allegations of loss of motive power due to EGR valve sensor malfunction back on March 2024. Prior to Hyundai Motor America filing the recall documentation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the number of unique incidents attributable to said condition in the United States of America was precisely 14. The reports in question were received between March 12 and April 17.

Thankfully for affected owners and Hyundai's legal team, no incident resulted in crashes, injuries, or worse. Both owners and dealers will be informed about this recall on or about June 28, with dealers required to replace the EGR valve assembly at no cost to the customer. HMA assures Elantra, Venue, and Kona owners that remedy assemblies were manufactured without solder flux contamination.

The supplier removed the flux application procedure from EGR valve assembly production back on January 29. Regarding the recall population, HMA lists 2,364 units of the Venue produced between January 12 and March 4. The Kona numbers 3,798 units from January 12 to February 8, while the Elantra is recalled to the tune of 7,349 units from January 11 to February 18.

Because it's nigh-on impossible to determine when your Hyundai has been produced, owners are recommended to run the 17-character vehicle identification number on Hyundai's website. If the VIN search tool says that your vehicle is recalled, then contact your preferred dealer to inquire about remedy part availability and schedule a free repair.

At $19,900 before destination charge and options, Venue is the most affordable Hyundai available in the United States as of May 2024. The Kona starts at $24,250 or $32,675 for the zero-emission setup, whereas the Elantra is either $21,625 in ICE flavor or $26,250 with the more frugal hybrid powertrain.
