To be revealed this coming summer, the G90 sedan will be joined by a family-sized version that BMW refers to as G99. The all-new BMW M5 Touring has big shoes to fill because BMW's last M5 Touring was the V10-powered E61 from 2007 through 2010.
First and foremost, everyone agrees that a twin-turbo V8 doesn't offer the aural pleasure of a high-revving V10. We can agree that G99 production will easily exceed that of the 500-horsepower predecessor, of which only 1,009 examples of the breed were assembled at the Dingolfing factory.

Based on leaked pics and spy photos, the G99 was rendered by AutoYa with styling cues from the G61 wagon and the sedan-bodied G60, especially from the M60 xDrive and the M560e xDrive. Somewhat brutish in comparison to the hugely capable F90, the newcomer will more than make up for the polarizing design language with its performance, interior appointments, and technological suite.

As far as the onboard tech is concerned, BMW iDrive with QuickSelect is arguably the biggest change over the current-generation M5 and 5 Series. To whom it may concern, QuickSelect implies swipes and taps rather than physical controls. In addition to the inevitable transition from pushing, turning, and pressing a physical control, BMW further sweetens the deal with a very clever personal assistant that grows to learn the driver's requirements and preferences over time.

Regarding the go-faster credentials of the all-new M5, hybrid assistance will make a world of difference over the F90. The plug-in hybrid system is obviously derived from that of the XM Label, in which the 4.4L twin-turbo V8 and transmission-integrated electric motor develop a staggering 738 ponies and 738 pound-feet (1,000 Nm) of twist, harnessed by M xDrive.

For the G90 and roomier G99, hearsay suggests a combined 718 horsepower, of which the gas-guzzling V8 contributes up to 577 horsepower and the permanently excited synchronous motor in the ZF-supplied transmission offers no more than 194 horsepower. In combination with a fairly large high-voltage battery, the G90 is believed to weigh a scandalous 2,435 kilograms (5,368 pounds) compared to 1,825 (4,023) for the F90-generation M5 CS.

The heaviest series-production M5 of them all makes up for the added heft with a different suspension geometry, better go-faster driving aids, and slightly wider tires. Our spy photographers captured G99 prototypes wearing 295/35 by 21s out back and 285/40 by 20s in the front, whereas the aforementioned Competition Sport uses 285/35 by 20-inch and 275/35 by 20-inch rubber shoes.

Because it's a plug-in hybrid, the 2025 BMW M5 has only two competitors to be afraid of, those being the forthcoming RS 7 from Audi Sport and the E 63 from Mercedes-AMG. The RS 7 will replace the RS 6 Avant in the automaker's lineup with an electrified twin-turbo V8 setup, whereas the next-generation E 63 will rely on an electrified twin-turbo I6.

That said, BMW confirmed the M5 Touring for the US market back on April 4, 2024. To be revealed in late summer, the M5 Touring should enter series production in November 2024, meaning that the first units will arrive stateside in early 2025.
