Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited (MMAL) has neither killed off the old-school third-generation Pajero Sport nor brought it to the standards imposed by the all-new fifth-generation Triton (L200) mid-size pickup truck.
The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport – also known as the Challenger (formerly, between 1996 and 2016) or Montero Sport and Shogun Sport – has been in continuous production by the Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi Motors using the Pajero nameplate since 1996, and it has reached its third generation in 2015. Naturally, that was enough time for the Japanese automaker to perform not one but two facelift procedures – in 2019 and earlier in March 2024 when it was first unveiled in Thailand.
Now it's time for the refresh to reach another important market – Australia. As such, the 2024 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport lineup features a redesigned exterior, fresh 18-inch wheel designs, plus new upper and lower grilles, front and rear bumper garnishes, as well as black headlamp extensions across the range. Additionally, the flagship GSR trim features a new dual-tone Graphite Grey with a Black roof pint option, while the GLX, GLS, and Exceed grades can be optioned with the latest Blade Silver metallic paint option, which debuted on the all-new Mitsubishi Triton.
Inside, all Pajero Sport models feature a new three-spoke, leather-trimmed steering wheel, which is also from the latest Triton, standard Adaptive Cruise Control, plus GSR and Exceed feature an 8-inch digital instrument cluster. Additionally, the top GSR trim has exclusive perks like a new black and burgundy two-tone premium synthetic leather with a diamond stitch pattern and dark titanium accents, while the GLX now includes standard equipment like automatic headlamps and wipers.
"Pajero Sport continues to perform a pivotal role in our product portfolio," said MMAL CEO Shaun Westcott. "It is spacious, comfortable, and capable, and the 2024 model year looks fantastic with its refreshed exterior, new wheels, and upgraded interior. The updated digital instrument display for Exceed and GSR, as well as improved standard specification for GLX, mean there are tangible improvements across the range." Still, it's not like the all-new Triton, some would say.
The 2024 model year Mitsubishi Pajero Sport range is available to order at dealerships with pricing starting from AUD 51,540 ($33,373 at the current exchange rate) for the GLX with five seats. All the other trims and versions feature a seven-seat arrangement, starting with the GLS at AUD 56,890 ($36,837), followed by GLS Deluxe at AUD 59,240 ($38,359), Exceed at AUD 62,590 ($40,523), and culminating with the GSR at AUD 64,840 ($41,980). All grades have the same powertrain, a 2.4-liter inline-four turbo diesel with 133 kW (178 hp) and 430 Nm (317 lb-ft). Power is sent to a 4-wheel drive system through an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
